Kiwanis Club of La Cañada – What We Do – Kids Need Kiwanis

Terrific Kids – For more than 30 years, the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada has heralded local students through the “Terrific Kids” program which stands for being Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable.  The Kiwanis Clubs from all over the world share in the same goal and motto to serve and recognize children.

The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada hosts a special luncheon to applaud the “Terrific Kids” who are selected from La Cañada Elementary, Palm Crest Elementary and Paradise Canyon Elementary school; with their family in attendance. The students designated as “Terrific Kids” have demonstrated helpfulness, a positive attitude, respect, and kindness in their day-to-day actions at school.

“Now, more than ever, the qualities of a ‘Terrific Kid’ can be considered powerful and gifted skills building the foundation for success,” stated Nancy Leininger, a Kiwanian and educator who has coordinated the program for multiple years. “We congratulate the students and thank their families for nurturing and supporting them … for they are truly our future leaders.”

La Cañadan of the Year – Each year, the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada honors the “La Cañadan of the Year” based on current and long-term broad-based involvement in volunteer community service, demonstrated leadership qualities, and their active role in bringing positive recognition to themselves and the community of La Cañada Flintridge.

This individual or couple is traditionally honored at a Kiwanis luncheon in La Cañada Flintridge.

Service Projects – Our most recent Service Project was “Travel with a Mission.” This project encouraged our members to bring their unused toiletry items for a cause.

Children’s Literacy – We gather and donate books to the students of Union Avenue Elementary School.  Union Avenue is a very large elementary school that only achieves minimum levels of improvement in terms of student performance – as determined by the State of California. Our donation allows students who may not afford books to pick a book and take them home.

Kiwanis One Day – One day in April, Kiwanis Clubs worldwide pitch in to clean up, fix up, or spruce up their communities and refresh facilities used by our local youth.

Our Kiwanis Club of La Cañada has helped the local Community Center, worked with La Cañada Valley Beautiful to clean up our local trails, and undertaken improvement projects at the YMCA of the Foothills.

It also gives our members a chance to work side-by-side with the rest of our Kiwanis family – the La Cañada High School Key Club and the Middle School Builder’s Club.

LCF Trails Game – In April, the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada sponsors in collaboration with the LCF Trails Council a community-wide game to celebrate student involvement, trail discovery, youth enjoyment, and clean-up of our local trails. Prizes are given to top point-earners.

Supporters of Youth – Sponsor of Scouts, Baseball Team, High School Scholarships, Valley Forge Scholarships, Sister Cities Association.

Key Club – We promote caring as a way of life. Key Club is a student-led high school organization. Our members make the world a better place through service. As Kiwanians, our goal is to encourage growth as individuals and leaders by answering the call to lead.

Builder’s Club – Builders Club empowers youth in grades 7 & 8 as they navigate this in-between stage of life. Members develop self-awareness as they discover their passion for serving, their desire to lead, and their ability to engage and collaborate with others. Service to school and community has become a way of life!
