Upcoming Training

The Basic Training Course is designed to provide volunteers with the basic skills and information needed to be prepared for, and respond to, emergencies and disasters in the community. All volunteers must complete this training to be eligible to join VERT and become registered with the City as disaster service workers. The Basic Training series consists of 6 three hour classroom modules. This training is provided free of charge. Participants will receive upon successful completion a certificate verifying they completed the course and a hard hat, shirt and ID badge for identification during future trainings and activations.

To register for the course please contact the City's Emergency Services Coordinator at (818) 790-8880 or download our online form and mail or fax it to our office.

Module 1 - Earthquake Awareness

  • Earthquakes and other disasters, emergency food, water and supplies
  • Disasters and utilities (gas, water, electricity and phone)
  • Being prepared at home, office, work, school and vehicle

Module 2 - Fire Suppression

  • Fire Chemistry
  • Hazardous Materials

Module 3 - Medical Operations I

  • How to recognize and treat life threatening conditions (airway obstruction, bleeding and shock)
  • Principles of triage and how to conduct triage evaluations

Module 4 - Medical Operations II

  • How to perform a head-to-toe patient evaluation in order to identify and treat injuries.
  • Disaster medical treatment areas.
  • Basic first aid treatment
  • Public health considerations when conducting medical operations.

Module 5 - Light Search and Rescue

  • Search and rescue planning
  • Size-up
  • Search techniques
  • Rescue techniques
  • Rescuer safety

Module 6 - Disaster Psychology and Team Organization

  • Psychological impact of a disaster on rescuers and victims, and how to provide "psychological first-aid."
