COMMISSIONS

The City Council has created five Commissions and two Committees with a varying degrees of authority and advisory responsibilities. They are asked to:

  • advise the City Council and City Manager on matters within their area of responsibility and expertise;
  • help focus attention on specific issues and problems within their scope of responsibilities and recommend actions and alternatives for City Council consideration;
  • act as channels of communications and information between City government, the general public and special interest groups;
  • reconcile contradictory viewpoints and provide direction and/or recommendations toward achievement of City-wide goals and objectives;
  • encourage broad citizen participation in the definition and formulation of City goals and actions for their achievement;
  • balance community wants with municipal responsibility and resources.

There is a City staff liaison assigned to each body to assist with the preparation of the agenda and minutes, and to ensure that the Commission's/Committee’s actions are transmitted or implemented as appropriate.

In December of each year, the City Council receives a list of vacancies that will occur in the coming year. That list is posted on the City Hall bulletin board. Most terms end in even-numbered years. If there is an unscheduled vacancy, advertising is done in the local paper, on the bulletin board, and on the website. The City Council interviews applicants prior to appointment.

For more information about any of these Commissions/Committees or to correspond with them, please contact the staff liaison listed on the appropriate Commission page. An e-mail link is provided.
