COMMISSIONS

The City of La Cañada Flintridge invites interested persons who are residents of the City to submit applications to serve on a City Commission or Committee. Effective June 1, 2010 the following vacancies will occur:

Design Commission: 3 vacancies. This Commission reviews all applications requiring design review for non-residential projects and residential planned developments. It also reviews any projects referred from the Planning Commission or City Council. Members include at least one architect, one professional in horticulture or landscape construction; one professional in a related field; and one owner or manager of a business within the city, not necessarily residing in the city.

Investment & Financing Advisory Committee: 3 vacancies. This Commission provides advice pertaining to the investment of the city’s funds by developing immediate and long-range plans for the investments. They also advise on debt issuance and management.

Parks & Recreation Commission: 3 vacancies. This Commission develops immediate and long-range plans for the City’s recreation needs; and schedules public recreational activities utilizing public facilities.

Planning Commission: 3 vacancies. This Commission reviews proposed residential and commercial development projects, subdivisions, and uses of land to determine their compliance with applicable City zoning and building laws.

Public Safety Commission: 3 vacancies. This Commission advises and makes recommendations to the City Council on law enforcement, fire protection and other pertinent public safety issues.

Public Works & Traffic Commission: 3 vacancies. This Commission advises and makes recommendations to the City Council on the public works program and maintenance requirements; and reviews and advises on publicly owned property and traffic-related issues.

Youth Council: 8 vacancies. This Council provides a forum for the exchange of positive ideas and information regarding youth-related issues.

For all but the Youth Council, appointments will be for four years expiring May 31, 2014. Members may serve no more than two consecutive four-year terms. Youth Council appointments are for two years expiring May 31, 2012. Youth Council members must be between the ages of 14 and 19 during the duration of their service.

All applicants must be residents of the City of La Cañada Flintridge except for one member of the Design Commission who is an owner or manager of a business within the city.

Applications are available at City Hall or may be downloaded. To be considered, applications must be received by the City Clerk no later than 5 p.m. on March 19, 2010. The City Council will conduct interviews in April and May. Appointments will be made at the May 17, 2010 meeting and terms begin June 1, 2010. The City Council has created five Commissions and two Committees with a varying degrees of authority and advisory responsibilities. They are asked to:

  • advise the City Council and City Manager on matters within their area of responsibility and expertise;
  • help focus attention on specific issues and problems within their scope of responsibilities and recommend actions and alternatives for City Council consideration;
  • act as channels of communications and information between City government, the general public and special interest groups;
  • reconcile contradictory viewpoints and provide direction and/or recommendations toward achievement of City-wide goals and objectives;
  • encourage broad citizen participation in the definition and formulation of City goals and actions for their achievement;
  • balance community wants with municipal responsibility and resources.

There is a City staff liaison assigned to each body to assist with the preparation of the agenda and minutes, and to ensure that the Commission's/Committee’s actions are transmitted or implemented as appropriate.

In December of each year, the City Council receives a list of vacancies that will occur in the coming year. That list is posted on the City Hall bulletin board. Most terms end in even-numbered years. If there is an unscheduled vacancy, advertising is done in the local paper, on the bulletin board, and on the website. The City Council interviews applicants prior to appointment.
